Wildfire update

Rocky Mountain House Forest Area - June 14, 2025

Low wildfire danger

Wildfire danger in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area is currently low due to cooler temperatures and recent rain, which have added moisture to the vegetation and reduced the overall risk. However, wildfires can still start, especially in dry areas or during windy conditions, it’s important to continue using caution with outdoor fires and do your part to prevent wildfires.

Fire ban update

The fire ban has been lifted for most of the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area, visit Alberta Fire Bans to view a detailed map and check local restrictions.

Even with the ban lifted in many areas, it's important to continue practicing safe fire use. Always follow safe burning practices and be cautious when having any outdoor fires.

How to get a fire permit

Fire permits are once again being issued in areas not under a fire ban. From March 1 to October 31, a fire permit is required for all burning activities in the Forest Protection Area, excluding campfires. This includes fireworks and exploding targets, which require a permit year-round.

Fire permits are free and can be requested online. You may also request your fire permit by calling the Rocky Mountain House forestry office at 403-845-8250.

Lightning caused wildfires

Lightning is typical this time of year and has been detected across the forest area, with more expected throughout the weekend. This increases the potential for new wildfire starts. Lightning caused wildfires can smoulder beneath the surface for several days before becoming active and visible when conditions are favourable, particularly during dry and windy weather.

If you see smoke or other signs of wildfire activity, report it immediately by calling 310-FIRE (3743). Early reporting helps firefighters respond more quickly and reduces the risk of wildfire spread.
