Wildfire update

Rocky Mountain House Forest Area - July 01, 2025

High wildfire danger

Due to recent high temperatures, the wildfire danger in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area is now high. This means wildfires can start easily and spread quickly under current conditions. While scattered rain showers and thunderstorms are forecast over the next few days, we are anticipating several days of high wildfire danger.

Wildfire situation

There are currently no active wildfires in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area.

Since January 1, 2025, there has been 53 wildfires.

See the Alberta Wildfire Status Dashboard for up-to-date information on wildfire locations, status, size, statistics and more.

Fire permits are required

A fire permit is required for all burning activities in the Forest Protection Area, excluding campfires. Fire permits are free and can be requested online or by calling the Rocky Mountain House forestry office at 403-845-8250.

Fireworks

Written permission from a Forest Officer is required to set off fireworks in the Forest Protection Area year-round. Fireworks and exploding targets are prohibited without a valid permit. Learn more about the rules for fireworks and exploding targets to help prevent wildfires.

Safe campfires

Please do your part to help reduce human-caused wildfires by being careful when having outdoor fires.

Soak it. Stir it. Soak it again.

  • Let the fire burn down before you plan on putting it out. Spread the embers within the fire pit, then add water or loose dirt, and stir.
  • Expose any material still burning. Add more water and stir again until you can no longer see smoke or steam. Do not bury your fire as the embers may continue to smoulder and can re-emerge as a wildfire.
  • Repeat until your campfire is cool to the touch.
  • If your fire is out, you should not be able to feel any heat from the ashes.

For more information on safely choosing your campfire site, preparing your campfire and properly extinguishing it, see campfire safety.
