Renewable Fuels Standard resources

Information for industry on meeting Alberta’s Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) Regulation requirements.

Regulation

Emissions standard

The Renewable Fuels Greenhouse Gas Emissions Eligibility Standard provides guidance on what fuels are eligible to meet the greenhouse gas (GHG) threshold requirements, as stated in the regulation.

Municipal waste guideline

The Municipal Waste Guideline for Renewable Energy Feedstock provides guidance on what types of municipal waste are considered renewable feedstock for the purposes of the RFS Regulation.

RFS requirements

The RFS requires a minimum annual average of 5% renewable alcohol in gasoline and 2% renewable diesel in diesel fuel sold in Alberta by fuel suppliers.

To meet the RFS, renewable fuels must demonstrate at least 25% fewer GHG emissions than the equivalent petroleum fuel.

Forms and reporting

Validation

  • Alberta GHGenius – Index to Sheets in the Spreadsheet
The Alberta GHGenius Model is the most current version of the spreadsheet-based modelling tool referred to in the Renewable Fuels Greenhouse Gas Emissions Eligibility Standard. It is used by renewable fuel industry stakeholders to calculate GHG emissions for the life cycles of fuels.
  • Renewable Alcohol and Bio-Based Diesel Validation Certificate
To be completed annually by a qualified validator to confirm eligible renewable alcohol or bio-based diesel has been produced according to the Lookup Table for Established Pathways in Appendix 1 of the emissions standard.
