Protecting the unique quality of Alberta’s Whisky

Bill 24 is intended to help Alberta Whisky producers differentiate their products in competitive domestic and international markets.

Status: Bill 24 was introduced on March 31, 2026.
Ministry responsible: Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction

Overview

Bill 24, the Alberta Whisky Act, would establish a clear legal definition for ‘Alberta Whisky’ to set high, made-in-Alberta standards for whisky production while supporting growth in agriculture, manufacturing, tourism and hospitality.

Alberta’s whisky sector has grown steadily and is earning national recognition for quality and craftsmanship. However, without a provincial definition, Alberta producers have struggled to gain recognition of their products from broader Canadian whisky, which operates under more flexible federal standards.

Under the proposed Alberta Whisky Act, Alberta Whisky must be mashed, fermented, aged, proofed, bottled in Alberta, made from 100% Alberta water pre-distillation and any wine or spirits blended into the whisky must be aged at least 2 years.

Alberta is not alone in establishing legal standards for regional whisky. Whisky-producing regions in Ireland, Scotland and the United States have long used legislation and other tools to protect the quality, authenticity and reputation of their products.

Key changes

If passed, Bill 24 would:

  • protect the integrity and reputation of Alberta-made whisky
  • give consumers confidence that products labelled ‘Alberta Whisky’ meet clear, high-quality standards
  • support market growth by helping Alberta whiskies stand out as premium products

Next steps

If passed, the Government of Alberta would work collaboratively with industry stakeholders on implementation, including any future labelling approaches and potential tourism initiatives.
