Building more affordable homes for Albertans

This new partnership will support 21 affordable housing projects across the province this year alone, delivering at least 1,460 new affordable units for Albertans in need. Alberta’s government has already committed more than $165 million to these projects through provincial programs such as Alberta’s Affordable Housing Partnership Program and Build Canada Homes will provide up to $220 million in additional grants and loans.

This partnership lays the foundation for the future of affordable housing development in Alberta, ensuring local needs remain at the forefront by basing funded projects on provincial recommendation.

Alberta knows its communities best, and this agreement puts that knowledge at the centre of federal housing investments. A new collaboration table will bring Alberta and Build Canada Homes together to coordinate project selection and funding decisions, ensuring federal dollars align with local priorities.

Alberta and Build Canada Homes will also work toward a “single window” approach for affordable housing proponents, streamlining the application process and helping get shovels in the ground faster. The coordinated process will make it easier for proponents to access provincial and federal funding, reducing red-tape and unnecessary duplication between the two systems.

This partnership builds on the success of Alberta’s Stronger Foundations affordable housing strategy, launched in 2021. Since the launch of the strategy, more than $730 million has been committed to build affordable housing across the province through Alberta’s Affordable Housing Partnership Program, bringing the province about 70 per cent of the way to achieving Stronger Foundations’ goal of supporting an additional 25,000 affordable households by 2031.
