Overview
Peace officers help ensure our communities are safe and secure places where we can live, work and raise families. They perform a number of duties from enforcing various laws to providing security in public facilities.
Alberta government
These peace officers are employed by the Alberta government:
- conservation officers
- fish and wildlife officers
- sheriffs
- regulatory inspection and investigative officers
Other organizations
Community peace officers are employed by these organizations:
- municipalities and counties
- automated traffic enforcement programs
- police services
- hospitals
- animal protection agencies
- post-secondary institutions

Appointment
Requests for peace officer appointments must be submitted by an authorized employer. Candidates for ‘peace officer’ status must meet these requirements:
- employment with an authorized employer of peace officers
- at least 18 years old
- no criminal record or outstanding criminal charges
- successful completion of required training
- successful physical abilities test
- education and experience:
- 2-year diploma
OR - equivalent education and experience – if employed by the Alberta government
OR - minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent – for community peace officer positions
- 2-year diploma

Training
As a peace officer recruit, you’ll need to complete approved training at the Training Academy in Edmonton.
If you worked or trained as a peace officer in another province, you must complete Alberta’s training for peace officer recruits to work long-term as one here.
As a recruit, you cannot enrol yourself in the Training Academy. Speak with your employer to arrange your training.
