Overview
The Math Bursary Program intends to encourage current and future Alberta K to 12 teachers to take a qualifying math course and strengthen their knowledge, skill, and confidence in teaching the subject. This bursary is for teachers already working in the school system and Bachelor of Education students at an Alberta post-secondary institution.
The bursary is a financial award of $1,000 that recipients may use to recover course costs and related expenses for successfully completing a pre-approved bursary-eligible course. Recipients will not have to repay any unspent funding. If the bursary does not cover all course expenses incurred, no additional funds will be awarded for that course.
Eligibility
Bursaries of $1,000 are available to applicants who meet the eligibility criteria. To receive this award, applicants must be either a pre-service education student or an in-service teacher.
You may apply for bursary funding if you have already started a qualifying math course.
Eligible education students must:
- be enrolled in a Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) degree program including at least 60% of a full course load, with satisfactory academic standing
- have completed all mathematics courses required to fulfil their B.Ed. requirements
- identify an additional math course from the list of bursary-eligible courses
- be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada
Eligible teachers:
- must be an Alberta certificated teacher in good standing currently employed in an Alberta K to 12 accredited school
Pre-approval and questions
You must apply online and receive a notice of pre-approval before completing a qualifying math course. Please keep your pre-approval notice as it includes instructions on how to claim your bursary funds. Applicants may apply for up to 2 bursaries. A separate application form must be submitted for each request.
For more information about which math courses qualify for salary purposes or assessments, contact Teacher Qualifications Services at the Alberta Teacher’s Association.
Current Bachelor of Education students should refer to their post-secondary institution’s academic calendar to identify math course requirements for their program. If you are unsure of your program requirements, check with your program advisor.
The math bursary may not be used to fulfil the math requirements of your B.Ed. degree.
If you are an Alberta certificated teacher who no longer has active student status at an Alberta-based teacher preparation institution, you may have to apply to take courses as an Open Studies student. Check with the post-secondary institution you wish to attend to see if courses are open to avoid losing application fees.
How to apply
Alberta Education Account
An Alberta Education Account is required to apply for the math bursary. If you are a certificated teacher who has used the TWINS Teacher Registry Self-Service website, you already have an Alberta Education account. Please login to your existing account.
All other applicants must request a new Alberta Education account.
Step 1. Download the pre-approval form
Download the Math Bursary Application Form Pre-Approval.
Fillable PDF forms may not open properly on some mobile devices and web browsers. For help opening the forms, contact PDF form technical support.
Step 2. Decide which course you want to take
Use the list of qualifying courses to find the course you want to take. You must complete this course within 12 months.
Step 3. Complete and submit the form
Complete the application form and submit it online at the Math Bursary Program online application upload site.
You must also submit copies of all post-secondary transcripts at this time using the online application.
We only accept applications and transcripts through the application upload site. Do not mail or email your application.
After you apply
We will send you an email within 21 business days if you are pre-approved to receive a bursary. This email will contain instructions on what to do after successfully completing your course.
Once you are pre-approved, you must register for the course specified in your application and complete it within 12 months.
If your application was incomplete and you fail to respond or submit required documents, your application will be deleted after 30 days.
After you complete the course
You must complete the course confirmation process within 90 days of successfully completing the course. Detailed instructions for this are included in the email notice of pre-approval.
We will mail your bursary cheque to you within 4 weeks of receiving your confirmation package.
Do not ask post-secondary institutions to send your official transcript directly to Alberta Education. Attach your transcript to your Confirmation of Course Completion Form and mail it to us.
Contact the Math Bursary Program Manager if you lose your math bursary cheque.
Application forms and details
The personal information provided in the application will be used for 3 purposes:
- to determine your eligibility for the Math Bursary Program
- to issue a T4A tax form as required by the Canadian Revenue Agency
- to contact you for program evaluation purposes
As the math bursary is more than $500, you will receive a T4A from Alberta Education. The amount is printed in Box 105 of the T4A and must be declared on your tax return.
Deadlines
You must submit your math bursary application by the following dates:
- Spring Session 2024 deadline: May 31, 2024
- Summer Session 2024 deadline: August 13, 2024
- Fall Session 2024 deadline: September 30, 2024
