The wildfire danger in the Lac La Biche Forest Area is moderate. Wildfires can still start and spread in cooler conditions but are less likely to become severe if detected quickly. Be cautious with outdoor fires.
Wildfire Situation
Since January 1, 2026, there have been 84 wildfires in the Lac La Biche Forest Area and approximately 2392 hectares (ha) have burned. There are currently 4 active wildfires located in the forest area.
Newby River Complex
The Newby River Wildfire Complex includes LWF081, LWF082, LWF083 and LWF084.
LWF081, LWF082 and LWF084 are classified as under control. LWF083 remains classified as being held.
Crews, supported by helicopters, are patrolling the wildfires and searching for hotspots as they continue working toward extinguishment. No growth has been reported on any of these wildfires.
There is no threat to communities or industry at this time.
Fire permits are required
From March 1 to October 31, a fire permit is required for all burning activities in the Forest Protection Area (FPA), excluding campfires. The use of fireworks and exploding targets within the FPA is prohibited year-round without a permit. Permits are free and can be requested online or by calling the Lac La Biche forest area office at 780-623-5388. Always follow safe burning practices.
Campfire safety
Before heading outdoors, check albertafirebans.ca for current fire advisories, restrictions and bans. Keep campfires within a proper fire ring on a non-combustible surface, never leave a fire unattended and always keep water nearby.
If the wind exceeds 15 km/h, or increases beyond the conditions outlined on your fire permit, extinguish your fire immediately.
When extinguishing a campfire, soak it, stir it and soak it again until it is cool to the touch.
OHV safety
When riding an off-highway vehicle (OHV) in a forested area, stop often and remove the debris that accumulates on your machine. Dry grass that is heated by your exhaust can start a wildfire when it falls to the ground.
