Due to increased temperatures, the wildfire danger is now high across the Lac La Biche Forest Area. As forest conditions become drier, wildfires can ignite more easily and spread quickly. We encourage everyone to use caution when spending time outdoors and to take the necessary precautions to help prevent new wildfires.
Wildfire Situation
Since January 1, 2026 there have been 84 wildfires in the Lac La Biche Forest Area. There are currently 4 active wildfires located in the forest area.
LWF083 was discovered on July 16 and is currently 55 hectares (ha). It is currently classified as out of control. This wildfire is located 2.2 km south of Newby River. Alberta Wildfire is responding with support from airtankers and helicopters with buckets.
LWF084 was discovered on July 16 and is currently estimatied at 6 ha. The wildfire is located 0.2 km south of and 13 km east of Christina River. This wildfire is currently classified as out of control. Alberta Wildfire is responding with support from helicopters with buckets.
LWF081 was discovered on July 16 and is currently classified as being held and is It is estimated at 25 ha. This wildfire is located 15 km east of highway 881. There are firefighters and heavy equipment working on this wildfires.
LWF082 was discovered on July 16 and is estimated at 76 ha. This wildfire is located 2.5 km east of highway 881 and 8.6 km northwest of Janvier and is now classified as being held. Firefighters and heavy equipment are working on containment lines.

Fire permits are required
From March 1 to October 31, a fire permit is required for all burning activities in the Forest Protection Area (FPA), excluding campfires. The use of fireworks and exploding targets within the FPA is prohibited year-round without a permit. Permits are free and can be requested online or by calling the Lac La Biche forest area office at 780-623-5388. Always follow safe burning practices.
Campfire safety
Before heading outdoors, check albertafirebans.ca for current fire advisories, restrictions and bans. Keep campfires within a proper fire ring on a non-combustible surface, never leave a fire unattended and always keep water nearby.
If the wind exceeds 15 km/h, or increases beyond the conditions outlined on your fire permit, extinguish your fire immediately.
When extinguishing a campfire, soak it, stir it and soak it again until it is cool to the touch.
OHV safety
When riding an off-highway vehicle (OHV) in a forested area, stop often and remove the debris that accumulates on your machine. Dry grass that is heated by your exhaust can start a wildfire when it falls to the ground.
