Constitutional obligation

The Supreme Court of Canada determined there is a constitutional obligation on governments to set compensation for judicial officers through a commission process that is:

  • independent
  • objective
  • effective

Public hearing

An independent Justices of the Peace 2017 Compensation Commission (2017 JPCC) was established under the Judicature Act to review and recommend the appropriate level of compensation for justices of the peace, for the period of April 1, 2017 to March 31, 2021.

Electronic written submissions

The deadline to send electronic written submissions was by or at noon on January 31, 2020.

The JPCC sought electronic written submissions on the appropriate level of compensation for justices of the peace for the period of April 1, 2017 to March 31, 2021.
