The fire danger across the Slave Lake Forest Area is currently low. Fires can still ignite, especially as grasses and other vegetation begin to die and dry out before winter, so please be cautious during any activity that can cause a spark.
Hunting season
If you head into the forest to hunt and use a campfire for cooking or heat, keep your fire small, safe and attended. Before leaving the site or going to bed, ensure your campfire is completely extinguished. Soak the fire with water, stir the ashes and soak it again to ensure it’s out. The fire is fully extinguished when you can no longer feel any heat from the ashes.
If you operate off-highway vehicles, stop often to check for and remove grass or other debris that can build up around your machine’s exhaust and hot spots. Carry firefighting tools such as a shovel, pail and extinguisher.

Free fire permits
Fire permits are required for any burning, except campfires, in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta until October 31.

Wildfire situation
There are no active wildfires in the Slave Lake Forest Area.
Firefighters in the forest area have responded to 65 wildfires since January 1, 2026, and 41 hectares have burned.
