The wildfire danger in the Calgary Forest Area is now low. Over the past week, widespread rain showers brought moisture across the region dropping the wildfire danger in the short term. Conditions can vary across the area, everyone spending time outdoors is reminded to recreate responsibly and do their part to prevent human-caused wildfires.
Wildfire situation
There are currently no active wildfires in the Calgary Forest Area.
Since January 1, there have been 97 wildfires in the Calgary Forest Area, which have burned over 23 hectares.
While temperatures are currently cooler, conditions can change quickly and wildfire season is not over. The risk of wildfire remains, and resources are in place to respond quickly to new wildfires.
Changing conditions
Late season moisture has been of particular benefit in some portions of the Calgary Forest Area. Rain showers and cooler temperatures have delayed the natural dormancy process of some vegetation. In late summer and autumn, grasses and smaller vegetation die and dry out, commonly known as curing. This curing process means that vegetation holds less moisture and is much more likely to burn. This is why it is typical to see an increase in wildfire danger before winter sets in.
If you're going to burn it, get a permit
Fire permits are required for any type of burning within the Forest Protection Area, with the exception of campfires. You can request your free fire permit online (preferred) or by calling the Calgary Forest Area main office at 403-297-8800.
