Overview

The Highway 40X Bypass (Highway 43 to Highway 40) will facilitate existing industrial and commercial activities in the Grande Prairie region and provide essential transportation links to other areas of Alberta and British Columbia.

The Grande Prairie region is expected to continue growing. Connecting these highways will support a better integrated and more efficient transportation network.

To inform the design, the project will review existing conditions, current issues and future growth and traffic volume in the Grande Prairie region. The design builds on the functional planning study approved in 2010. The project will consider:

  • physical constraints
  • property and access impacts
  • wildlife, environmental and cultural sensitivities
  • feedback from adjacent property owners, businesses, area residents, City of Grande Prairie, County of Grande Prairie and the public

Timelines

Detailed design is anticipated to be complete in 2025 with construction anticipated to begin in 2026.

Benefits

Traffic volumes have increased in the area and the Highway 40X Bypass from Highway 43 to Highway 40 will reduce volumes of heavy truck traffic in the area while improving overall safety.

When completed, the Highway 40X Bypass will:

  • improve driver safety and highway infrastructure in the region
  • support current and future traffic needs as the area continues to grow and develop
  • support economic development through robust transportation infrastructure

Public engagement

Stakeholders and the public are invited to attend a public information session to learn more about and provide feedback on the detailed design for the Highway 40X Bypass. Feedback will be considered in the final design.
