Highway 2 Interchange (Sturgeon County)

Engineering and design are complete for a new interchange at the Highway 2 and Cardiff Road intersection in Sturgeon County near Morinville.

Overview

The intersection of Highway 2 and Cardiff Road in Sturgeon County is a busy roadway crossing, with approximately 15,000 vehicles travelling through the area daily. Growing development in Sturgeon County makes Highway 2 a major north-south corridor.

Current intersection design and use impacts safety and traffic flow in the following ways:

  • The intersection is frequently congested with drivers waiting to turn left from Cardiff Road, heading south to St. Albert, requiring them to travel across 2 lanes of high-speed traffic.
  • Large commercial and semi-trucks also use the intersection, further impacting traffic flow.

Key improvements

The new interchange will improve traffic safety at the current intersection by introducing:

  • an extension of Cardiff Road up and over Highway 2, enabling north-south and east-west traffic to flow without interruption, and allowing westbound drivers on Cardiff Road to continue south to St. Albert without having to stop or cross an opposing lane of traffic
  • a roundabout on Cardiff Road at 100 Street to accommodate more efficient traffic flow and reduce collision risk

The map illustrates the proposed interchange project to replace the existing intersection structure with an overpass and roundabout to improve traffic safety and uninterrupted traffic flow.

Benefits

A grade-separated design and roundabout are both safer methods of traffic control than the current at-grade, signalized intersection. By enhancing the transportation infrastructure in Sturgeon County and the Town of Morinville, these improvements will:

  • improve traffic safety by reducing collision risk
  • reduce bottlenecks and congestion by facilitating more continuous and efficient traffic flow
  • increase capacity and support regional economic growth through better accommodation of large trucks and heavy equipment

Timeline

  • May 2026 (tentative) – Construction is expected to begin.
  • Fall 2027 – The interchange is anticipated to open to traffic.
  • Fall 2027 to Summer 2028 – Site cleanup and project completion

Project details

The project includes:

  • a 2‑span bridge at Cardiff Road over Highway 2
  • westbound to southbound loop ramp, northbound and southbound exit, and entry ramps for access onto and off of Highway 2
  • a single-lane (local road) roundabout at the 100 Street and Cardiff Road intersection
  • Cardiff Road improvements: adjustments within interchange footprint
  • drainage work: ditch realignment and 2.1 metre culvert crossing, east of Highway 2
  • west service roads integrated with the interchange

Engineering for the proposed interchange has been completed, including:

  • realignment of 100 Street to the east to safely accommodate a roundabout at Cardiff Road and 100 Street (2011)
  • temporary work completed around the interchange site to facilitate traffic flow during interchange construction (2011)
  • installation of the current traffic signal at the intersection (2014)

Public engagement

A public open house information session for this project was held on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at the Morinville Community Cultural Centre.
