The wildfire danger is moderate in the High Level Forest Area. If you’re spending time outdoors this weekend, please use caution and always ensure campfires are fully extinguished before leaving the area.
Wildfire update
HWF026 was detected yesterday afternoon and is currently classified as out of control. The wildfire is located approximately 34 kilometres northwest of Wadlin Lake in the Buffalo Head Hills and is now estimated at 27 hectares in size. Dozers and NVIS crews worked overnight on suppression efforts, and with the help of some precipitation, the fire saw very little growth. Once low-lying clouds lift today, firefighters and aircraft will continue working to contain the north and west sides of the wildfire. No communities are at risk.
As of January 1, 2026, there have been 27 wildfires in the High Level Forest Area.

Fire permits
A fire permit is required for any burning within the Forest Protection Area, with the exception of campfires. Permits are required during wildfire season, from March 1 to October 31. Obtaining a permit helps ensure burning conditions are safe and allows local authorities to stay informed of burning activity in the area.
Farming safely during wildfire season
Spring work is here, and while this time of year can often be wet, cold, or rainy, the risk of agricultural wildfires remains present. Dry vegetation and crop residue is highly flammable, so extra precautions must be taken to prevent fires on the farm.
What can be done:
- Keep machinery clean. Clear out any debris around hot spots and pinch points.
- Maintain electrical components and equipment
- Grease mobile components of equipment according to manufacturer's recommendations
- Regularly clean air filters
- Regularly check coolant and oil levels
- Keep a full, up to date ABC fire extinguisher in or near the cab and know how to use it
- Read the FireSmart Farm and Acreage Guide to learn more about farm fire safety.
