Grande Prairie Forest Area - August 19, 2025

Low wildfire danger

The wildfire danger across the Grande Prairie Forest Area is low. Recent rainfall has helped reduce the wildfire risk, but wildfires can still start even in cool or damp conditions. Please continue to be cautious when spending time outdoors and do your part to prevent wildfires.

GBZ001 - Kiskatinaw River wildfire

The Kiskatinaw River wildfire, which started in British Columbia on May 28, remains classified as being held. It is estimated at 26,195 hectares (ha) in size and is located near the Alberta–British Columbia border, approximately 68 km west of Grande Prairie. This wildfire was caused by lightning.

Please be aware that the BC Wildfire Service has an Area Restriction in place that limits access to some areas on the B.C. side of the border. 

The BC Wildfire Service is leading the response to this wildfire, with Alberta Wildfire providing support as needed.

Since January 1, there have been 101 wildfires in the Grande Prairie Forest Area, burning a total of 5,884 ha.

Get a fire permit

During wildfire season, a fire permit is required in the Forest Protection Area for all burning except campfires. Permits help Alberta Wildfire track where burning projects are happening and outline the conditions for a safe burn.
