Wildfire update

Edson Forest Area - October 09, 2025

Low wildfire danger

The wildfire danger in the Edson Forest Area is now low. Recent rain and cooler temperatures have lowered the fire danger, and with seasonal temperatures in the forecast, it is not expected to rise significantly in the short term. While cooler conditions reduce the risk, wildfires can still start and spread in dry vegetation and windy conditions.

Fire advisory

A fire advisory remains in effect for most of the Edson Forest Area. Please visit Alberta Fire Bans for more information.

 Under this advisory

  • Existing fire permits are valid, but extension requests may not be granted.
  • New fire permits will be issued on a case-by-case basis, for essential burning only.
  • Safe campfires are allowed.

Prohibited

  • Any burning without a valid fire permit, except for campfires.

Wildfire situation

Since January 1, there have been 95 wildfires in the Edson Forest Area burning a total of 1,091 hectares (ha).

There are currently 2 active wildfires in the area, both classified as under control. Firefighters are monitoring as needed, the wildfires are not expected to spread.

Cooking and warming fires

If you are planning on having a cooking and warming fire while recreating, ensure that it is fully extinguished before leaving the site. The forest area detects an increase in these types of fires this time of year caused unintentionally by recreationalists. Ensure you build your fire on bare mineral soil, away from dead dry grass. If not properly extinguished, the fire can spread when the snow melts later in the day when the temperature increases, or burn deep into the soil where it can smoulder for long periods of time.

Fire permits are required

From March 1 to October 31, a fire permit is required for all burning activities in the Forest Protection Area (FPA), excluding campfires. Permits are free and can be requested online or by calling the Edson forestry office at 780-723-8269.
