Overview
The Government of Alberta’s Class 5 driver’s licence classroom curriculum is aimed at educating new drivers on driving skills and the rules of the road.
Licensed driving schools can choose to:
- use the Government of Alberta’s Class 5 Curriculum, or
- submit a curriculum to Alberta Transportation Driver Licensing Programs and Standards (DPLS) for approval
Curriculum
The Government of Alberta’s Class 5 classroom curriculum is included in the Class 5 Driver Education Instructor Guide. The Class 5 Driver Education Instructor Guide will be provided by Alberta Transportation to all driver training schools licensed to deliver Alberta Transportation’s Class 5 classroom curriculum.
To use your own Class 5 classroom curriculum, see the Class 5 curriculum criteria (PDF, 109 KB) and Definitions of Class 5 Curriculum Components (PDF, 505 KB).
You must complete the Classroom Curriculum Outline and Approval Checklist (PDF, 136 KB) and submit it with your proposed curriculum to DPLS.
You are only permitted to submit a maximum of 3 for approval.
If Alberta Transportation does not approve the third version of the curriculum, you must use the standardized Government of Alberta’s Class 5 Curriculum.
Program materials
You can order the Class 5 Driver Education: A Guide for Students from Alberta Queen’s Printer.
You must maintain a list of students on the Class 5 Driver Education Student Classroom Record (PDF, 125 KB).
