Commercial vehicle – Oversize and overweight permits

Permits allow carriers to move oversized and overweight vehicles with permit conditions to help maintain safety and protect infrastructure.

Overview

Maximum vehicle weight and dimension limits are established to protect public safety and preserve Alberta’s highway infrastructure. These limits apply to all commercial vehicles operating on public roads. Loads that exceed legal weight or dimension limits may be eligible for an oversize or overweight permit if all permit requirements are met.

Establishing maximum weight and dimension limits helps to:

  • minimize safety risks to the public
  • prevent damage to roadway infrastructure
  • support the movement of commodities which are non-divisible, impractical to divide or uneconomical to transport at legal dimensions
  • provide carrier with clear, consistent requirements for safe transport

Online applications

You can apply for web-enabled permits through TRAVIS Web or by contacting a TRAVIS agent. Agents charge a service fee, which may vary.

A list of web-enabled permits and accredited agents can be found in the Obtaining Permits for Overweight and Over-dimensional Vehicles document or by contacting the Central Permit Office.

Access the application instructions

To access the step-by-step instructions:

  1. Go to TRAVIS Web.
  2. Select 'Application User Guides' from the left side menu.
  3. Open the TRAVIS Routing User Guide.

Not all permits are available through TRAVIS Web.

Cost

The permit fees are regulated by the Commercial Vehicle Dimension and Weight Regulation.

Seasonal Axle Weight Program

Alberta’s Seasonal Axle Weight Program adjusts allowable axle weights throughout the year to protect road infrastructure while supporting industry needs. During winter, frozen ground provides additional support beneath the pavement, allowing heavier loads to be hauled safely.

Seasonal weights are reduced during spring when thawing ground conditions make pavement more vulnerable. Weight restrictions may be implemented to prevent damage to weakened road structures. These seasonal adjustments balance economic efficiency with long-term infrastructure preservation.

Find information on Road Restrictions, Road Bans and Seasonal Weights.

Amended weights on overweight permits

Carriers may reduce weights on single trip overweight permits after being weighed at a government vehicle inspection station or mobile inspection station, without providing a weigh ticket, as long as they meet the requirements of the Amended Weights on Single Trip Overweight Permits procedure.

Weights may also be lowered without following this procedure if a government weigh scale ticket is submitted to the Central Permit Office.

Weight allowances for alternative fuel types

Alternative fuel systems (electric, CNG, LNG, hydrogen, hydrogen/diesel dual fuel) often weigh more than diesel engines. Additional axle weight allowances are available to support the use of these cleaner technologies.

  • Permits are available to allow up to 1,000 kg of extra weight distributed across the steering and drive axle group.
  • The overall Gross Vehicle Weight does not change. Vehicles must remain within the maximum Gross Vehicle Weight allowed under the Commercial Vehicle Dimension and Weight Regulation.
  • Applies to:
    • buses
    • trucks
    • truck tractors
    • semi trailer combinations
    • truck and pony trailer combinations
  • Seasonal restrictions apply. Travel on banned roads is prohibited when drive axle weights exceed ban percentages.
  • Municipal approval is required when operating on municipal roads.
