Phasing out emissions from coal

Alberta will phase out coal-powered electricity by early 2024, years ahead of the 2030 target.

Overview

In 2015 the Government of Alberta announced the elimination of emissions from coal power generation by 2030.

Alberta is rapidly reducing emissions and targeting a carbon-neutral grid by 2050. Electricity emissions have declined by 53% since 2005 and the province will have phased-out all coal generation by early 2024.

This reflects a shared commitment from both industry and our government to global leadership in environmental, social and governance outcomes, which are increasingly driving investment decisions.
