Wildfire update

Calgary Forest Area - September 29, 2026

Moderate wildfire danger

More seasonal conditions have set in and the overall wildfire danger is moderate. Although the risk is somewhat lower in forested areas, there will be an increasing risk in grassland areas unless the forecast brings rain showers every few days. As more frost occurs, it will increase the drying process of grass and other small vegetation. This means that it will die, dry out or become dormant for the winter and more likely to burn quickly. Please do your part to prevent human caused wildfires.

Fall hazard reduction burning

Over the coming weeks, firefighters will coordinate with Îyârhe Nakoda First Nations to remove potentially dangerous fuels through hazard reduction burning. Over 100 hectares of land have been identified as priority for burning. Removing this fuel now could effectively reduce wildfire risk immediately and could support firefighting efforts later in the season or next year.

Smoke, flame, firefighters and equipment may be visible along Highway 1, near Mînî Thnî over the coming weeks. There are no expected impacts to traffic.

Firefighters work alongside planners, municipal partners, Indigenous communities, and local industry to carefully identify locations, assess conditions, and conduct operations. This work also provides invaluable cross-training and operational opportunities.

Wildfire situation

There are currently no active wildfires in the Calgary Forest Area.

Since January 1, there have been 99 wildfires in the Calgary Forest Area, which have burned over 22 hectares.

Wildfire season is not over. It is common to see an increase in wildfire danger at this time of year. Grassland areas are particularly vulnerable to wildfire during the spring, fall, and winter months—especially during chinook events, when cured grasses can lead to rapid fire spread. Resources are in place to respond quickly to new wildfires..
