Wildfire update

Calgary Forest Area - October 20, 2026

High wildfire danger

The wildfire danger in the Calgary forest area is now high. Several days of warm and gusty conditions, combined with a lack of precipitation across the region has increased the risk. At this time of year, vegetation does not hold moisture as readily and without some kind of precipitation every few days, the wildfire danger remains elevated. There is ample dry fuel on the landscape and anyone spending time outdoors is reminded to use extra caution when having a campfire. Never leave fires unattended and do your part to prevent human-caused wildfires.

Fall hazard reduction burning

Operations will continue again this week with Îyârhe Nakoda First Nations to remove potentially dangerous fuels through hazard reduction burning. October 21 is anticipated to be the final day of operations on this project for the month. Depending on conditions in November, additional areas may be identified for burning.

Other small hazard reduction burning projects may be initiated this week at some Alberta Wildfire facilities. All operations will be dependent on resource availability and weather conditions.

Firefighters work alongside planners, municipal partners, Indigenous communities, and local industry to carefully identify locations, assess conditions, and conduct operations. This work also provides invaluable cross-training and operational opportunities.

Wildfire situation

There are currently no active wildfires in the Calgary Forest Area.

Since January 1, there have been 107 wildfires in the Calgary Forest Area, which have burned over 23 hectares.

Wildfires at this time of year are very likely to be human-caused and preventable. Grassland areas are particularly vulnerable to wildfire during the spring, fall, and winter months—especially during chinook events, when cured grasses can lead to rapid fire spread. Resources are in place to respond quickly to new wildfires.
