The average wildfire danger in the Calgary Forest Area remains moderate. Cooler overnight conditions have slowed the increase in wildfire danger, however the risk remains as vegetation dies off or becomes dormant for the winter season. Rain and snow are expected this weekend allowing a short term relief from the elevated risk in the autumn.
Prescribed fire operations
Firefighters from the Calgary Forest Area are planning to conduct small-scale prescribed fire operations later today. This hazard reduction project is located at the Highwood fire base on Highway 541 near the junction with Highway 40. Dead and dry vegetation, like cured grass, acts as fuel for fast moving wildfires. Removing it now could help us later this season, or in the spring before green up occurs.
Smoke is a reality with any type of fire. Firefighters will make every effort to minimize smoke impacts and will burn in conditions when venting is likely. All roads and highways are expected to remain open although minor delays may occur.

Fire advisory
A fire advisory remains in effect for the Calgary Forest Area. Under this advisory:
- New fire permits will be issued on a case-by-case basis, for essential burning only.
- Fireworks and exploding targets are prohibited.
Safe campfires are allowed under the current fire advisory. As fire danger levels rise, these restrictions can be adjusted to reduce the likelihood of human-caused wildfires. Visit Alberta Fire Bans for more information and to see the advisory area on a map.
The fire restriction that had been in effect for a small portion of the Calgary Forest Area is now lifted.
Extinguish your campfires
This time of year, most wildfires are human-caused. Dry grasses combined with windy days and a lack of precipitation mean fires can still ignite and spread quickly. If you’re out hunting, camping, or enjoying the forest, please keep fire safety top of mind. Here are some reminders:
- Never leave a campfire unattended.
- Always soak it, stir the ashes and soak it again until cool to the touch.
- Improperly extinguished or abandoned campfires can have serious consequences.
