Wildfire update

Calgary Forest Area - June 14, 2025

Moderate wildfire danger

The wildfire danger level in the Calgary Forest Area remains moderate. More unsettled conditions have moved into the area bringing cooler temperatures and localized rain showers. In many locations this has added moisture to vegetation, reducing the overall risk. The wildfire danger is still very high in areas that did not receive the moisture.

Remember, wildfires can still ignite even in cool, damp conditions. If you're spending time outdoors, be cautious and do your part to prevent wildfires.

Changes to fire ban

The fire ban has been lifted in some portions of the Calgary Forest Area. It remains in effect in northern central portions of the forest area, but has been downgraded to a fire advisory in southern portions of the forest area. The Alberta Fire Bans website outlines the detailed boundaries of the fire ban and fire advisory and provides additional information. Please be aware of what rules are in place for locations you may be visiting this weekend, follow those rules and help prevent wildfires.

Fire ban

The fire ban remains in effect for some portions of the Calgary Forest Area.  Under this fire ban all outdoor wood fires are prohibited.

Prohibited:

  • All outdoor wood fires on public and private land. This includes campfires in:
    • backcountry and random camping areas
    • designated campgrounds
    • day use areas
    • private land
  • Barbecue charcoal briquettes
  • Fireworks and exploding targets

Allowed:

  • Propane fire pits and natural gas-powered appliances
  • Indoor wood fires
  • Open flame oil devices

For a detailed map of the impacted areas, please visit Alberta Fire Bans.

Fire advisory

For the portions of the Calgary Forest Area that are not under a fire ban, a fire advisory is in effect.

Under this fire advisory:

  • new fire permits will be issued on a case-by-case basis for essential burning only
  • fireworks and exploding targets are prohibited

Campfires are now allowed in areas under the fire advisory. Always use extra care and attention when enjoying a wood campfire. Never leave it unattended. When it is time to put it out, remember: soak it, stir it and soak it again to ensure it is completely extinguished and safe.

The fire advisory will remain in effect until conditions improve or further escalation to a fire restriction is warranted.

Since January 1, 2025, the Calgary Forest Area has responded to 22 wildfires which have burned 32.83 hectares.
