Wildfire update

Calgary Forest Area - June 09, 2025

Very High wildfire danger

The wildfire danger in the Calgary Forest Area has climbed to very high. Warm conditions persisted through the weekend and the area has not received significant rain in many days. Strong, gusty winds are expected in the next few days which could allow any new wildfires to grow quickly and be challenging to contain. Cooler conditions and precipitation are forecast towards the end of the week.

Please follow the rules of the fire ban and allow us to maintain critical wildfire personnel and resources where they are needed most and not occupied responding to preventable wildfires.

Fire ban

The fire ban that had been in effect for central and northern areas of the province has been expanded to include the Calgary Forest Area.  Under this fire ban all outdoor wood fires are prohibited and existing fire permits are suspended.

Prohibited:

  • All outdoor wood fires on public and private land. This includes campfires in:
    • backcountry and random camping areas
    • designated campgrounds
    • day use areas
    • private land
  • Barbecue charcoal briquettes
  • Fireworks and exploding targets

Allowed:

  • Propane fire pits and natural gas-powered appliances
  • Indoor wood fires
  • Open flame oil devices

Smoke conditions in the Calgary Forest Area

Smoky conditions are beginning to develop in the Calgary Forest Area. While no wildfires are actively burning in the area, smoke from wildfires burning in northern British Columbia and Alberta is drifting in and impacting air quality. Visit FireSmoke Canada to see where wildfire smoke is coming from and predictions on how the area may be impacted in the coming days.

Wide aerial landscape view of forest and mountains. A river flows through the forest. The air is hazy with smoke, but blue skies are still visible. Residents and visitors across the Calgary Forest area may have woken to a noticeable haze and the smell of smoke in the air. Smoke from wildfires burning in other areas is drifting in.
