Wildfire update

Calgary Forest Area - July 06, 2026

Moderate wildfire danger

The wildfire danger in the Calgary Forest Area has climbed to moderate. While northern portions of the forest area received substantial rain, southern portions are drier and at higher risk. As summer conditions settle in, the potential for wildfires is rising. With the forecast calling for warm temperatures and little rainfall, the wildfire danger is likely to increase over the coming week. Be cautious when spending time outdoors and do your part to prevent wildfires.

Choose a safe campfire site

A safe campfire starts with choosing the right location. In campgrounds or recreational areas, use the designated stoves, fire rings or fire pits. These are designed to keep fires from spreading and are the best choice for a safe campfire. When outside of a campground, choose a site that is clear of dry grass and vegetation, away from low hanging branches and on level ground sheltered from wind.

Never leave your campfire unattended and always have water nearby in case your campfire escapes.

When you're done, ensure your campfire is completely extinguished. Soak it, stir it and soak it again until the ashes are cool to the touch.

If you’re going to burn it, get a permit

Fire permits are required for any type of burning within the Forest Protection Area, with the exception of campfires. You can request your free fire permit online (preferred) or by calling the Calgary Forest Area main office at (403) 297-8800.

Always follow safe burning practices.

Supporting flood recovery in Kananaskis

Even if they were not responding to wildfires, staff in the area were kept busy on other assignments. Following recent flooding in Kananaskis Country, Calgary Forest Area firefighters assisted Alberta Parks with flood recovery efforts. Staff helped with chainsaw work, clearing debris and supported ongoing recovery in impacted areas.

Several wildfire personnel use chainsaws to clear storm debris and fallen trees in a forested area. Evergreen trees and distant mountains are visible under a blue sky with large white clouds. Alberta Wildfire crews are supporting the flood recovery work in Kananaskis Country.
