The wildfire danger remains moderate in the Calgary Forest Area. Warm temperatures and dry conditions are forecast heading into the weekend, before a potential shift to cooler, more unsettled weather later on. Dry vegetation remains susceptible to ignition, and wildfires can still start and spread quickly under these conditions. Please use caution with any outdoor activity and do your part to help prevent human-caused wildfires.
Enjoy the last weekend of August responsibly
As we head into the last weekend of August, many Albertans will be taking advantage of the warm weather to spend time outdoors. While summer may be nearing an end, wildfire season is still underway and wildfire prevention is still a top priority. Whether you're camping, hiking, fishing, riding trails, or simply enjoying a day outdoors, we encourage everyone to make responsible recreation a part of their plans.
Follow these tips to help prevent wildfires:
- Keep campfires small and never leave them unattended. Always ensure they are fully extinguished - soak it, stir it and soak it again. For more information, see Campfire safety.
- Do not park vehicles in tall grass, as hot exhaust systems can ignite a fire. Instead, park on bare ground or gravel.
- While operating off-highway vehicles, stop frequently to remove debris from hotspots. Carry firefighting equipment such as a shovel, collapsible pail or fire extinguisher. For more information, see Off-highway vehicle safety.
- Fireworks and exploding targets are prohibited in the Forest Protection Area without written consent from a forest officer.
If you're going to burn it, get a permit
Fire permits are required for any type of burning within the Forest Protection Area, with the exception of campfires. You can request your free fire permit online (preferred) or by calling the Calgary Forest Area main office at (403) 297-8800.
Always follow safe burning practices.
