The wildfire danger is moderate across the Calgary Forest Area, with southern regions experiencing high danger due to drier conditions. While recent rainfall has brought moisture to localized regions, precipitation has been scattered and spotty, leaving other regions drier. A continued stretch of warm weather is expected to continue, further drying vegetation and increasing the potential for wildfires. Please use caution when recreating outdoors.
As summer winds down, wildfire risk remains
The return to school may signal the end of summer for many Albertans, but wildfire season continues through the fall. Warm temperatures and dry conditions towards fall can continue to support wildfires starting and spreading quickly. Wildfire prevention remains just as important today as it was at the start of summer.
Whether you're spending time outdoors close to home or enjoying one last camping trip before fall, everyone has a role to play in wildfire prevention. Please continue to make responsible choices when recreating outdoors.
Follow these tips to help prevent wildfires:
- Keep campfires small and never leave them unattended. Always ensure they are fully extinguished - soak it, stir it and soak it again. For more information, see Campfire safety.
- Do not park vehicles in tall grass, as hot exhaust systems can ignite a fire. Instead, park on bare ground or gravel.
- While operating off-highway vehicles, stop frequently to remove debris from hotspots. Carry firefighting equipment such as a shovel, collapsible pail or fire extinguisher. For more information, see Off-highway vehicle safety.
- Fireworks and exploding targets are prohibited in the Forest Protection Area without written consent from a forest officer.
Wildfire situation
There are currently no active wildfires in the Calgary Forest Area.
Since January 1, there have been 92 wildfires in the Calgary Forest Area, which have burned over 20 hectares.
