The wildfire danger in the Calgary Forest Area has dropped to moderate. Widespread rainfall and cooler temperatures over the past several days have increased the moisture levels across the area, reducing the potential for wildfire activity. While conditions have improved, it can take time for larger vegetation to regain moisture after extended periods of hot and dry conditions like those seen for the past month in southern Alberta. Be cautious if you're spending time outdoors and do your part to prevent wildfires.
Fire restriction lifted
Due to widespread rainfall and cooler temperatures, the fire restriction is no longer in effect for the Calgary Forest Area.
Many fire permits issued before the fire restriction period are no longer valid. Before conducting any burning, please check whether your permit remains valid and obtain a new permit if required. You can request a free fire permit online (preferred) or by calling the Calgary Forest Area main office at (403) 297-8800.
Alberta Wildfire appreciates the cooperation shown by campers, recreationists, and visitors during the restriction period. Although several unauthorized campfires were found and a small number of warnings were issued, most individuals respected the restriction and adjusted their activities accordingly. Thank you to everyone who played a role in reducing the risk of human-caused wildfires by making responsible choices outdoors.
Wildfire situation
There are currently no active wildfires in the Calgary Forest Area.
Since January 1, there have been 90 wildfires in the Calgary Forest Area, which have burned over 20 hectares.
Please note that the number of current year wildfires on the Alberta Wildfire Status Dashboard for the Calgary Forest Area has recently increased, as previously documented incidents have been added to the system. Most of these incidents were unauthorized campfires found in violation of the current fire restriction. The updated numbers do not reflect a sudden increase in wildfire activity, but instead a more accurate number of wildfire incidents already identified and responded to by staff.

Smoky conditions
Smoky conditions are expected to intermittently continue in the area due to ongoing wildfire activity across Canada and the United States. There are currently no active wildfires in the Calgary Forest Area contributing to smoke conditions.
