Moderate wildfire danger
With cooler temperatures and some much needed moisture, the wildfire danger has dropped to moderate across the Calgary Forest Area (CFA). An increase in wildfire danger is expected through the week as very warm temperatures are forecast before the weekend.
Hazard reduction burning
Wildland firefighters from the CFA took advantage of optimal conditions and completed some hazard reduction burning near our Elbow fire base. Close to two hectares of grass was burned, removing it as potential fuel for fast moving wildfires. Spring is an opportunity to safely and effectively conduct these projects and remove hazardous fuels from around structures and communities. Removing it now could help us later in the season. Conditions will be monitored over the coming days and additional projects may be started.
A wildland firefighter from the CFA is burning away dead and dry vegetation under ideal conditions on April 19. This thick, matted grass and shrubs could fuel a fast moving wildfire and by removing it now, we are reducing the risk to nearby structures and forests.
Wildfires in the CFA
There are currently no active wildfires in the forest area.
Since January 1, the CFA has responded to 10 wildfires which have burned 26.34 hectares.
Fire permits required
A reminder that fire permits are required for any burning, except campfires, in the Forest Protection Area of Alberta. Fire permits are free and can be requested from the Calgary Forest Area main office by calling 403-297-8800 or requested online.
