The overall wildfire danger in the Calgary Forest Area is now moderate. Although some areas remain under snow, and recent moisture has helped reduce wildfire risk in exposed areas, conditions are changing rapidly. Warm temperatures are anticipated this week which will continue to accelerate the snow melt and further dry out dead vegetation in already exposed areas. Spring wildfires can spread very quickly through dead vegetation and can be challenging for firefighters to extinguish.
Hazard reduction burning
Early spring is an ideal time to conduct hazard reduction burning around communities. Hazard reduction projects remove dead and dry vegetation to reduce risk around communities or infrastructure and support firefighting efforts later in the season.
As conditions and resources allow, hazard reduction burning will take place across the Calgary Forest Area. Firefighters and planners work closely with municipal partners, Indigenous communities and local industry to identify locations, assess conditions and conduct operations. This work also provides invaluable cross-training, and operational opportunities.
Forest area staff are currently coordinating with Îyethka Îyârhe Nakoda First Nations, the MD of Bighorn and CPKC Rail on hazard reduction burning near Mînî Thnî and Highway 1 to reduce wildfire risks in the area. Conditions are being assessed frequently and the project may commence as early as April 29th.
