Low wildfire danger

With continued and welcomed moisture across the region, the wildfire danger in the Calgary Forest Area remains low. Before green-up occurs later in spring, most vegetation does not hold moisture well and warm windy days can increase the wildfire danger very quickly. Fast moving grass fires are of particular concern at this time of year.

2026 wildfire season

The Calgary Forest Area is ready to respond to new wildfires. A great deal of planning and preparation goes into each wildfire season. Firefighters need specific training, vehicles and equipment to allow them to quickly respond to any new wildfires. One of the first tasks for any firefighting crew is to obtain and inventory necessary equipment, ensure it is all in working order and stowed efficiently for quick access.

Crew members in green shirts organize firefighting equipment in a parking lot with fire‑marked trucks and supplies around them. Newly onboarded firefighters in the Calgary Forest Area are receiving their assigned equipment and tools for the 2026 wildfire season.

Spring wildfire conditions

Almost all wildfires at this time of year are caused by people. You can help reduce the risk of grass fires by being cautious with any open flames and by always following the conditions of your fire permit. Make sure your fire is fully extinguished before leaving, and keep water and tools nearby so you can put out fires quickly if needed. Even small precautions can make a big difference while the landscape remains very dry.

Wildfire situation

There are currently no active wildfires in the Calgary Forest Area.

Since January 1, there have been 11 wildfires in the Calgary Forest Area.
