Application process
Before applying to a particular school authority, prospective international students will review the programming offered by school authorities and select the one that best suits their interests, needs, location and other considerations.
- International students either work with an education agent as a third-party liaison or work directly with the school authority throughout the application process.
- Each school authority sets its own application process and fees.
Below are the ministry's recommendations and some key considerations for school authorities to ensure a successful application process.
Program acceptance
The school authority will need to issue a letter of acceptance for the student to obtain a study permit from the IRCC.
- This letter confirms that, upon arrival in Canada, the international student will be admitted to a school within the school authority.
- School authorities should issue their own letters of acceptance on school authority letterhead.
Deposit payments
Before issuing a letter of acceptance, school authorities are encouraged to collect applicable fees, including deposit payments.
- This practice ensures that students are committed to attending the school as an international student and are committed to paying for their education upon arrival.
- School authorities are encouraged to establish transparent policies related to deposit payments.
Policies could include:
- specifying the required deposit amount and deadline for payment
- clarifying under what circumstances, if any, the deposit may be refunded
- for example, the case of visa denial by the IRCC
- emphasizing that a letter of acceptance will only be issued after the deposit is received
Establishing these policies:
- helps maintain the integrity of the international student program
- ensures that spaces are reserved in Alberta schools for committed international students
