Scott St. Jean

Location: Breynat, Alberta

Few have so taken to heart the cry of “Play Ball!” than Scott St. Jean.

Scott’s love of the game has helped bring Breynat, Alberta families and neighbours together through the numerous softball tournaments he has organized within the community. In one very special instance, Scott stepped up to help organize a memorial tournament on behalf of a family in the community, taking great pains to prepare the ball diamonds in such a way as to pay tribute to those being honoured and celebrated. Scott’s efforts have been credited with helping Breynat’s residents recover from the mental strain of COVID and returning smiles to many local faces.

Along with helping to build community spirit, the tourneys have also helped fundraise to cover the costs of repairs and upgrades to the local community hall.

Nowhere is Scott’s good-natured personality and boundless energy more evident than on the ball diamond and during tournaments folks will see him effortlessly switching the organizer’s cap for a batting helmet to take a few swings himself, all the while putting fellow ball players and event participants first.

Scott is always anxious to welcome newcomers to the game, offering coaching advice and sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with people new to the sport. And when he isn’t working behind the scenes keeping the tournaments running smoothly or chasing down flies in the outfield, Scott has even taken on the thankless role of umpire!

For his selfless acts of kindness, community spirit and sheer love of the game, Scott St. Jean is a Hall of Famer in the hearts of residents and ball fans and a worthy recipient of Northern Lights Volunteer Recognition honours.
