When it comes to minor hockey in Crossfield, there are few who can say they’ve seen the game from all angles – but Joel Bruce is one who can. He has worn many different hats in support of kid’s hockey, sharing his passion for the game from behind the bench and from his seat at the board table.
As president of the Crossfield Minor Hockey Association, Joel helps to manage the day-to-day business of the association, taking a hands-on approach to create the conditions for a positive experience for local athletes. He was instrumental in revitalizing Crossfield’s hockey program; his efforts made it more accessible and inclusive while growing the competitive level of the game to help kids to continue developing their skills. From helping acquire a new ice plant for the local rink to improving ice quality and reducing costs to working to raise funds to ensure that every youngster has a chance to play, Joel has shown that he is truly a team player.
But perhaps Joel’s greatest contribution has been in helping to guide the young players who lace up for practices and games. As a head coach and assistant, he has helped to nurture local youth, teaching them not just about the game but also helping them pick up some valuable life skills along the way – skills they can use beyond the confines of the rink.
For his contributions in support of minor sport and the community, Joel Bruce gets First Star honours as a Northern Lights Volunteer Recognition Program recipient.
