Sometimes the actions that have the biggest impact are those started with the seed of inspiration.
Hoping to challenge and engage students during the uncertainty of the COVID 19 pandemic, Emily Yang began hosting book clubs and teaching reading classes. In two short years, Emily grew her classes into an inclusive and volunteer-driven organization, and Leaders in Literacy was born. Recognizing that their fellow students and younger children had become isolated, it seemed fitting that it would be young people to step up to help connect children through a shared interest in literacy and learning.
Emily and her Leaders in Literacy colleagues are accomplishing impactful change through initiatives like writing competitions, reading classes, fundraisers and Chinese mentorship programs. So far, the team has fundraised over $950 for children’s books for the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation. Leaders in Literacy also hosts volunteer-coordinated Chinese and English language classes for junior high audiences from Edmonton and Calgary.
Through her leadership, creativity and dedication, Emily Yang is helping to inspire students, fellow Leaders in Literacy team members and youth across Alberta and is a worthy recipient of Northern Lights Volunteer Recognition Program honours.
