Overview
The Alberta Crown Land Vision guides a modern approach to managing provincial Crown land that better meets the needs of communities, Indigenous Peoples and job creators without compromising conservation values and recreation opportunities.
Albertans have told us that the current system needs a variety of improvements, including:
- continued conservation of Crown land and biodiversity to ensure land uses are sustainable into the future
- support for the sustainable use of trails and backcountry land
- removal of confusing and conflicting rules
Albertans will have opportunities to share feedback and ideas so improvements to Crown land management consider and reflect public input.
Crown land covers approximately 60% of the province and sustains Alberta’s abundance of resources and biodiversity. These lands are used for conservation, recreation and economic development and support the continued exercise of Treaty rights.

Key priorities
Make the land-use system clear and understandable
- Review and modernize legislation for the 21st century.
- Integrate the management of all Crown lands, while respecting:
- our legacy of conservation
- parks and protected areas
- our heritage of public lands and working landscapes
- the knowledge of Indigenous Peoples
Support sustainable funding and partnerships for recreation
- Improve outdoor recreation management across all Crown lands to ensure there is a range of sustainable recreation opportunities for Albertans into the future.
- Develop a trails act and fee framework to improve outdoor recreation experiences.
Focus on outcomes and reducing red tape
- Make life easier for hardworking Albertans and job creators.
- Focus on outcomes with integrated and collaborative planning approaches.
