What is an air emissions inventory?
An air emissions inventory is an accounting of air pollutant emissions released over a given time for a given political or geographic area. It can include the following sources:
- Area (for example: total home heating in the Edmonton region)
- Mobile (for example: cars, trucks, rail)
- Point (for example: industrial stack)
Air emissions inventories can include emissions from both anthropogenic (for example: industrial, commercial, agricultural, transportation, etc.) and natural (for example: forest fire, vegetation, soil, etc.) sources.
Annual Emissions Inventory Reporting Program
Beginning in 2019, all Environmental Protection and Enhancement Act approved industrial facilities are required to carry out an inventory of their sources and air emissions.
The results of the first year of the Annual Emissions Inventory Reporting Program (AEIR) are available in the following documents:
- Results of the Alberta Annual Emissions Inventory Reporting Program: 2018 Inventory Year
- AEIR Air Emission Rates
- AEIR 2018 Annual Rates Dataset (December 2020)
- AEIR Maximum Rates Dataset (December 2020)
- AEIR Normal Rates Dataset (December 2020)

National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) Emissions Data
Environment Canada collects emissions data from over 9,000 industrial facilities across Canada through its NPRI. Facilities that meet certain reporting criteria and whose emissions meet or exceed the set reporting thresholds of NPRI-listed substances are required to report. NPRI data can be searched at:
Air emissions summaries
The Air Pollutant Emissions Inventory (APEI) is compiled by Environment Canada and provides emission data for several common air pollutants by province/territory and for all of Canada. The most recent APEI inventory, as well as trends and projections, can be found at:
