In April 2022, Okotoks-based company GroundUp Eco-Ventures won a gold award in the 14th edition of SIAL’s Innovation competition.

“We are very grateful for the opportunity to attend SIAL Montreal and humbled by our award,” says Shawn Leggett, president and founder of GroundUp Eco-Ventures. “SIAL Innovation has provided us with a platform to introduce our company and our innovative products to the industry. We look forward to our continued relationship with SIAL and attending the 2023 Innovation show in Toronto.”

GroundUp Eco-Ventures accompanied trade development officer Marissa Brewer and 7 other Alberta companies to Montreal for Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation's first in-person trade mission since COVID closures in 2020.

“Marissa made the whole experience so easy. We felt a little anxiety heading to our first trade show and Marissa helped ease those fears.”

SIAL Innovation is an international competition that rewards the best food and non-food innovations. Open to all exhibitors, it rewards the winners according to 4 criteria: packaging, manufacturing process, merchandising and recipe. SIAL shared that GroundUp Eco-Ventures was selected out of more than 40 applications because it is “a new example of the circular economy made very accessible by turning discarded ingredients into practical, nutritious and gourmet products.”

GroundUp Eco-Ventures is a unique company based on the concept of circular economies. Using clean technology, they focus on creating value from upcycling the waste streams of both the coffee and craft brewery industries. Their products currently include Barley Saved-Grain Flour, Gluten-Free Coffee Flour, Protein Brownie Mix, High-Protein Pancake Mix and Coffee Oil, which are now available online and in local stores in Okotoks, Calgary, Edmonton, High River and Lethbridge.
