Correctional services

Two types of centres

There are 8 adult correctional and remand centres in Alberta.

Correctional centres normally house inmates serving sentences of up to 2 years and remand centres house those awaiting trial.

Inmates serving sentences longer than 2 years serve their sentences in Correctional Service of Canada facilities.

Inmates may be placed in either a correctional or remand centre depending on:

  • centre capacity
  • transfers between centres
  • the best interest of inmates

Both correctional and remand centres can house male and female inmates, but some centres only house males.

Youth serve their sentences in youth custody facilities.

If you want to send an inmate money or personal items, learn how on the Contact an inmate page.
