Overview
We gathered input on proposed changes to improve conservation and management of fish populations in order to create better sportfishing opportunities in Alberta.
Topics of discussion included:
- management objectives and fishing regulation options for a number of waterbodies across Alberta
- notification items on fishing regulations, which are necessary to achieve conservation management objectives
- updates on items from previous engagements, including walleye stocking, harvest slot limits, and special harvest licence tags. Information on competitive fishing events, angling guide licences, as well as proposed management options for periods of low flow and high temperatures was also included.

Outcomes
Your feedback was incorporated into the 2022 Sportfishing Regulations, which come into effect on April 1, 2022.
2022 sportfishing regulations highlights
- New approach to protect fish during periods of low flows and high temperatures using time of day angling restrictions in southwestern Alberta.
- Changes in regulations for walleye on Minnow Lake, Smoke Lake, Crawling Valley Reservoir, Sherburne Reservoir, Wadlin Lake, and Lesser Slave Lake and its tributaries.
- Changes in regulations for Northern pike on Clear Lake, Forty Mile Coulee Reservoir, Talbot Lake, Wadlin Lake, and Lesser Slave Lake and its tributaries.
- Changes in regulations for trout on Pine Coulee Reservoir, and County Sportplex Pond.
- Changes in regulations for lake whitefish on Shiningbank Lake.
- Changes to the bait ban on sections of the Clearwater River and North Saskatchewan River.
- Changes to the open season at God’s Lake.
