Alberta vital statistics (event) records, such as birth, marriage, death and stillbirth, may be corrected with an amendment.

Overview

Once your request is received, Vital Statistics will advise you regarding the amendment requirements including your eligibility to amend the record, if evidence documents are required and if there is an amendment fee.

Birth event details
Full name of person whose birth is registered

Indicate whether it is a first and last name, or mononym.

(A name where there is no “given name” or “last name” distinction; culturally the person only has a “name”. A mononym may have one or more words. Examples: Harpreet Singh, Grey Eagle Feather, Madonna, etc.)

(proof of next of kin relationship is required) A next of kin may only amend a marriage record when one of the couple is deceased (proof of death is required). Next of kin includes: parent, step-parent, sibling, step-sibling, child, step-child, spouse and adult interdependent partner. Next of kin does not include: grandchild, grandparent, in-law, child of a sibling (niece/nephew) or relative. This also does not include any kind of ex; e.g., ex-spouse, ex-adult interdependent partner, ex-step parent, ex-step child, etc. A person who has been adopted, or placed their child for adoption, is not next of kin to biological relations.
