Overview
Traffic signs serve an important function informing drivers of traffic regulations, warning about road characteristics or hazards and providing necessary information for route selection. The traffic sign catalogue classifies traffic signs respectively as: Regulatory, Warning, Guide or Information signs.
Traffic sign catalogue
The traffic sign catalogue contains the standard specifications and identification codes for traffic signs in Alberta. Signs in the traffic sign catalogue are grouped into 3 main classes of signs (Regulatory, Warning and Information) and further divided into several sub-classes.
Descriptions of each of the traffic sign classes and a link to the traffic sign catalogue for each class of sign is provided below. The sign catalogue is being reformatted starting in 2025 to include both a detailed specification sheet and a true scale drawing (without annotations) for all fixed message signs or signs with graphical elements. All typeface is specified in a ClearviewHWY font series (including positive and negative contrast) unless otherwise indicated.
Regulatory signs (Class R)
Regulatory signs indicate traffic regulations that apply at specific times or places on roads.
Warning signs (Class W)
Warning signs provide an advance indication of conditions on or adjacent to a road that are potentially hazardous to drivers.
Guide and information signs (Class I)
Guide and information signs indicate information for route selection, locating off-road facilities or identifying geographical features or points of interest.
