Overview

In Alberta, there are 2 general types of permits for harvesting Crown timber in the province: community and commercial.

Community timber permits

Commercial timber permits are issued to local, eligible, small forestry operators registered under community timber programs. These permits provide access to Crown timber on Alberta public lands.

These permits are issued to a specified number of small operators at a specified dues rate. Each operator may harvest less than 21,000 m3 of timber.

Commercial timber permits

Commercial timber permits are issued to Alberta residents or companies who are not part of community timber programs. Like community timber permits, commercial timber permits provide access to Crown timber on Alberta public lands.

Commercial timber permits are obtained via competitive auctions and tenders, or sold directly to eligible operators. Each operator may harvest less than 5,000 m3 of timber.
