Overview
Alberta’s government is committed to providing support to survivors of sexual assault, no matter where in the province they live.
To support this goal, we offer qualified health-care professionals 2 specialized online training courses:
- Rural Sexual Assault Care – Expanded – open to a variety of health-care professionals
- Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) – open to registered nurses
These online courses are delivered by Northwestern Polytechnic and funded by Alberta’s government. Each course helps to:
- prepare health-care professionals to provide high-quality, trauma-informed care to survivors of sexual assault
- strengthen local capacity throughout the province to respond to sexual assault
Rural Sexual Assault Care – Expanded
The Rural Sexual Assault Care – Expanded online course equips participants with the technical and emotional skills required to provide comprehensive, trauma-informed care to recent survivors, including:
- assessment
- intervention
- forensic evidence collection
- court testimony
This micro-credential course builds on the Enhanced Emergency Sexual Assault Services training program offered through the Association of Alberta Sexual Assault Services.
Eligibility
The Rural Sexual Assault Care - Expanded course is open to:
- registered nurses
- nurse practitioners
- registered midwives
- physicians
- licensed practical nurses
- medical students
- medical residents
- travel nurses
Course details
- delivered online by Northwestern Polytechnic
- delivered in an asynchronous format with the support of a qualified instructor
- 10 to 12 hours of self-paced learning material
- 90 days to complete the course
Cost
- $299 per person.
- Health-care providers working in rural Alberta are eligible for a bursary from Alberta's government to cover tuition fees.

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)
The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) online course equips participants with highly specialized knowledge and skills required to:
- support survivors of recent sexual assault
- conduct forensic and non-forensic examinations
- collect and preserve forensic evidence
- document findings
- provide interventions, including prophylaxis and discharge follow-up
- provide testimony related to sexual assault examinations
The curriculum is aligned with the theory requirements for the International Association of Forensic Nurses' Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner – Adult/Adolescent (SANE-A) certification exam.
Eligibility
The Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) course is open to:
- registered nurses – proof of current registration is required upon enrolment
Course details
- delivered online by Northwestern Polytechnic
- prepares participants to:
- provide comprehensive sexual assault examinations, forensic evidence collection, documentation, testimony and trauma-informed survivor care
- write the International Association of Forensic Nurses' Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner – Adult/Adolescent (SANE-A) certification exam
Cost
- $899 per person
