Wildfire update

Rocky Mountain House Forest Area - March 16, 2026

Low wildfire danger
The wildfire danger in the Rocky Mountain House Forest Area is currently low. Above zero temperatures are forecasted over the next week and snow is expected to melt. Dry and dead vegetation will become exposed, increasing the fire danger and the risk of fast-moving grass fires.

Last year's dry vegetation is extremely flammable. Wildfire risk will increase until new grass and plants begin to grow and hold more moisture.

Fire permits are required

A fire permit is required for any burning in the Forest Protection Area, with the exception of campfires, from March 1 to October 31. Fire permits help ensure burning is done safely by allowing staff to review planned burns and confirm conditions are appropriate. They also let wildfire staff know where burning is taking place so firefighters and aircraft remain available to respond to wildfires.

FireSmart work continues around Nordegg

FireSmart work around the Hamlet of Nordegg has been ongoing, with debris burning taking place for several weeks. This work is expected to conclude by the end of the week. Smoke may be visible in the area. This work supports ongoing wildfire risk mitigation in the area.

Wildfire situation

The Rocky Mountain House Forest Area has responded to 8 wildfires in 2026. Two of these wildfires remain under control, along with one wildfire still active from last season.
