Stay safe and get immunized. Book your respiratory immunizations at the Book an immunization appointment webpage.

Overview

Respiratory viruses are infections that affect the airways and lungs. These include RSV, influenza and COVID-19. These illnesses are usually mild, but can be more serious in young children, older adults and people with certain health problems.

During respiratory virus season, hospitals and emergency departments across the province can see increased cases of respiratory illnesses. Surge and overcapacity protocols are in place to help meet capacity needs.

As we work to meet Albertans healthcare needs, you can help by choosing your care options wisely.

Know your health care options

During respiratory virus season, it is important to ensure that emergency services are still available to those who need them the most. Not every flu or RSV case needs a visit to the emergency department. Care options include community pharmacies, primary care providers, urgent care centres and virtual care services.

There are many options available to get appropriate health care for you or your family. Visit Know Your Health Care Options to find out the best way to get the care you need.

Health Link is available 24/7 by dialing 811. Speak to a nurse and get free, round-the-clock telephone advice and guidance on your next steps. You can also speak with a trusted primary care provider including your family doctor, nurse practitioner or a community pharmacist.

Protect yourself

Protect yourself and your family from respiratory viruses by practicing preventative health best practices:

  • stay home if you are feeling sick
  • wash or sanitize your hands often
  • cover your coughs and sneezes
  • avoid touching your face
  • clean and disinfect surfaces regularly (for example, counters, doorknobs)

Annual vaccines for respiratory illnesses help protect people from people from respiratory viruses. Learn more at Get immunized against respiratory illness this fall.
