Municipal heritage

Information for municipalities on how to identify and protect historic resources.

Municipal Historic Resources

Alberta municipalities are empowered under the Historical Resources Act to designate historic places through the passage of a local bylaw. The bylaw legally protects historic resources from demolition or alterations that take away from their heritage value.

The 'Creating a Future' manual series provides detailed information on how municipalities can identify and protect their historic places.

The Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada provides further guidance for how to make conservation decisions.

Owners of designated Municipal Historic Resources may be eligible for grant funding through the Alberta government.

For information on how owners of Municipal Historic Resources are supported through grants and conservation advice, read Protecting Alberta’s Historic Places.

Register of Historic Places

All designated historic places in Alberta can be found on the Alberta Register of Historic Places. Municipalities are responsible for submitting Municipal Historic Resources to the Alberta Register using the online eForm. To add a Municipal Historic Resource, a municipality must:

  1. contact the program manager to obtain a user ID, password and instructions
  2. review the instructions for submission
  3. log into the eForm to complete the required information (save often)
  4. submit your request

A representative will notify you once your submission has been uploaded to the Alberta Register.

Municipal Historic Resources that are included on the Alberta Register of Historic Places will be submitted for listing on the Canadian Register of Historic Places.
