Overview

If you are enrolled in Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP) and have a verified Alberta.ca Account and a MyHealth Records account, you can apply for the mobile health card. Moving to a digital health card can prevent loss and damage experienced with the paper health card.

Eligibility

Currently, only those who are 14 years or older, are Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada, who make their permanent home in Alberta and are not temporarily absent (for example, studying abroad) are eligible for a mobile health card. In the future, the mobile health card will be available to all residents of Alberta who are eligible for AHCIP.

Albertans 14 years or older will be able to obtain their own mobile health card. Parents or guardians of those under 14 will need to submit a request through MyHealth Records to have their child’s mobile health card added to their Alberta Wallet.

Scan the mobile health card

The mobile health card has a QR code, which gives some health facilities, such as hospitals, the ability to scan your card and access your information such as name, date of birth and personal health number. The QR code contains your full credentials and a digital signature that proves the credential was issued by the Ministry of Primary and Preventative Health Services.

If a health facility does not have the ability to scan your mobile health card, it will still accept the mobile health card and manually check your credential as occurs now with the paper card. You will still need to provide photo ID to confirm your identity.

Share your mobile health card

The steps below describe how to share your mobile health card.

If you want to share your mobile health card with someone, such as a spouse or partner, you are able to do so through your MyHealth Records account.

Step 1: Go to MyHealth Records

Select the Tools and Settings help page, then choose 'Share My Record' from the list for step-by-step instructions on how to share your record.
