Health cards

Introduction

Your personal health card is essential for accessing insured health services in Alberta. It serves as proof you are eligible to receive full coverage for medically necessary physician services, insured hospital services, and some dental and oral surgical health services under the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP).

You must be registered with the AHCIP to receive insured hospital and physician services.

Types of cards

Paper Alberta Personal Health Card

Standard paper health card available to all Alberta residents who meet the AHCIP eligibility criteria.

Mobile Alberta Health Card

A digital health card available to Albertans enrolled in the AHCIP who have a verified Alberta.ca Account and a MyHealth Records account.

About health care cards

  • Using your health card

Always present your paper or mobile health card with a valid photo ID (such as a driver’s licence or identification card) when visiting a doctor, hospital, or other health facility in Alberta or while visiting another province or territory in Canada.

  • Using your health card outside of the province

If you receive health care in another province or territory, your card will be accepted, but there are limits to what is covered. Not all health services available to you in Alberta are covered when obtaining care outside of Alberta.

AHCIP covers only limited physician and hospital costs outside of Canada. You should purchase additional travel or medical insurance before you leave Alberta.

Quebec accepts health cards when accessing medical services in a hospital, but you will be asked to pay for services at a non-hospital facility. If these services are covered by AHCIP, submit a claim for reimbursement.
